We aim to provide an inspirational curriculum that is stimulating for all children and that enables them all to achieve. Subjects are integrated into exciting themes that provide a balance between skills and knowledge. Wherever possible, the writing outcomes for pupils will be directly linked to other areas of the curriculum, such as history, geography or science.

The writing curriculum is carefully sequenced and progressive from EYFS through to Year 6. Learning objectives are informed by the EYFS Development Matters Curriculum guidance and the 2014 National Curriculum from Year 1 to Year 6. Throughout Key Stage 1, children will apply their developing literacy skills in writing a range of genres. In Key Stage 2, each year group will cover a non-fiction and a narrative genre each half term, ensuring that during the year, each year group has covered each of the six genres of non-fiction writing. Throughout the year this will be supplemented by at least two poetry units.

Through this provision, we aim to ensure that all children

· are able to write with confidence, accuracy, clarity and imagination

· understand how, and be able to, write successfully in a range of genres in fiction and poetry

· understand how, and be able to, write successfully in a range of genres in non-fiction

· are able to effectively plan, draft, revise and edit, and publish their own writing

· learn how to critically and constructively appraise their own and others’ writing

· develop their spoken and written language and vocabulary in order to produce creative and well-crafted texts which are appropriate to audience and purpose

· develop skills and confidence with the use of grammar, punctuation and standard English conventions and apply these skills to their writing

· develop skills and confidence with the use of letter sounds and spelling conventions and apply these skills to their writing

· develop a fluent, joined and legible handwriting style

· are able to successfully apply the skills learned in writing lessons to all other areas of the curriculum.

Handwriting

The children are taught to write their letters using a cursive script and are expected to be joining their writing. When children are successfully joining their writing neatly they will be given a handwriting pen.
